Now that we are in the heat of the summer, there is so much more to think about than how to stay cool. We think about our homes every day and maybe we notice that it’s time for new paint or that we need to mow the lawn. However, we often overlook the bigger things like the roof over our heads. Due to the summer heat and storms, it is important that you are checking up on the functionality of your home even during this time of year.
Checking Your Roof for Damages
Your roof can withstand a lot of wind and rain, but over time the weather starts to cause wear and tear. It is important to regularly take a look at your roof so that you can spot damage before it becomes more costly to repair. We cover different types of damages in our recent blog post.
If you want to check out your roof, start by looking around the yard to see if there are loose branches or debris – this will give you a clue as to what could be on your roof, too. It might be a good idea to make sure that all foliage is well-kept and away from the roof and gutters to avoid potential damages and clogs.
You can also look at your roof for any signs of discoloration or warped shingles, which can indicate age on the roof and could mean those shingles aren’t protecting your home the way they used to. When shingles become damaged, small pieces could break away or entire shingles could come off in a simple wind. Take a look around your yard to see if there are any shingles in the yard. If there are, it is definitely time to think about getting a professional inspection done.
Gutters and Downspouts
Consider looking at your gutters and downspouts to make sure that they are clean and without blockages so water can effectively flow off the roof without pooling. On the downspouts be sure to inspect the bottom where the water flows out to see if there is any odd debris, blockages, or small animals nesting. You will want to remove those blockages, and if you are not comfortable doing so you can contact animal control (if it is an animal) or our team to come remove the blockage for you.
If you see there are little black specs (or the color of your roof), this is a sign that the granules from the shingles are starting to come off. These little granules may seem small and insignificant but they are the main thing helping the water to bead up and run off your roof instead of being absorbed into it. Once those little granules start coming off and running through the downspout, it is only a matter of time until they are going to diminish and leave your roof bare — unable to protect your home from rain, hail or other storm damage.
Getting A Thorough Assessment
It is a good idea to keep an eye on your roof. This can include looking up from the ground, looking around your yard, and getting on the roof to check things out. While getting on the roof is the best way to inspect for roof damage, we all aren’t able to physically get on a roof and look. If you’re not sure, think about calling a professional to take a look.
